What can make a hamburger better? One answer is stuffing it. If you have never had a cheese stuffed burgers, you don’t know what you are missing. Believe it or not, putting cheese and other “toppings” inside the hamburger patty makes a world of difference when it comes to both flavor and texture. The stuffing flavors permeate the beef throughout the cooking process and retain a higher moisture level that allows you to cook the meat fully without having it dry out. The next time you fire up the grill, don’t forget about this recipe.

How to Stuff a Burger

A stuffed burger may seem magical, but making one isn’t as difficult as you think. The secret is that you don’t really “stuff” a single large patty with the filling but rather sandwich the filling between two smaller patties.

To form stuffed hamburgers, first, divide the ground beef in the recipe into eight equal balls. Press your thumbs into the center of one of the balls and press down to form a depression. This is the space where you will place your stuffing, so make sure the walls are high enough to contain your “toppings” while still keeping a thick base. Once you fill the depression with your stuffing, place another flat patty on top. Pinch the meat together with your fingers to combine the two patties.

Stuffed Burger Ideas

Just about anything hot you like to put on top of a burger is fair game to go inside one. Here are a few delicious combinations to help jumpstart your creativity:

  • The Classic. It is hard to go wrong with American cheese, mushrooms, and onions. Cook the mushrooms and onions a little longer than usual to get more of the moisture out before stuffing.
  • Some Like It Hot. This burger version of a jalapeño popper is fantastic. Combine cream cheese, diced jalapeño peppers, and cooked bacon bits.
  • The Greek Isles. Feta cheese may not melt well, but its saltiness and pungent flavor work perfectly in a burger, especially when mixed with chopped black olives and served with tzatziki sauce.

Tips for Making Grilled Stuffed Burgers

  • Don’t forget to season your ground beef. Worcestershire sauce is excellent, but you can also add a pinch of salt, fresh ground pepper, cayenne pepper, dried mustard, garlic powder, or paprika for extra flavor.
  • Go easy on the fillings to keep your stuffed burger from falling apart. Make sure to shred any of the cheese you use extra fine, and cook your burgers at a little lower temperature for a longer time to let the filling gently release any excess moisture.
  • Use a specialty stuffed burger press to make stuffing simple. You can find stuffed hamburger presses in cooking stores or online. There are many great options on Amazon for less than ten bucks!
  • Feel free to switch out the meat your burger meat. This burger stuffing method works equally well with ground turkey or even bison!

Ingredients

Here’s a list of what you need:

  • Ground beef chuck
  • Burger seasoning
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Shredded cheese
  • Hamburger buns

I like to use ground chuck to make these stuffed hamburgers. The amount of fat in ground chuck makes juicy burgers.

What should you use to stuff the burger? I have used Cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, or even a simple blue cheese. If you didn’t want to use cheese you could add some grilled vegetables or even some barbeque sauce.

We love stuffed burgers! Yours look amazing…ours never turn out that pretty but they sure taste good. I like caramelized onions, mushrooms and swiss; Steve likes bacon – lots of it. That’s probably why ours don’t look like yours…we fill then too full! Great post!!!!

  3. Cristine

I like burgers with the ingredients inside them – not necessarily stuffed but all mixed together. Right now I’m on a portabella and smoked Gouda kick
