If you have been in Starbucks this spring, you have noticed this new latte flavor. The Smoked Butterscotch Latte is on the menu. Are you wondering how this tastes? Let me tell you, it has a hint of smoke with the subtle flavor of Butterscotch.
Starbucks has a large array of coffee house drinks. Yes, some aren’t for the traditionalists. These flavors are for those who have a sweet tooth. One reason I like to make copycat recipes at home is because I can control the level of sweetness when I make the recipe at home. You can also ask for your barista to make your drink more or less sweet. I love coffee drinks with milk, but I am not as much of a fan when it comes to drinks on the sweet side.
You might wonder what in the world is Butterscotch. It is a lot like caramel, but there is a slight difference in the ingredients. Caramel is made up of granulated white sugar, butter, vanilla, and heavy cream. Butterscotch is similar, but instead of granulated white sugar, brown sugar is what makes butterscotch have a different flavor. I think the flavor of butterscotch is more sophisticated as the brown sugar that is used isn’t as pure as granulated white sugar, so the flavor is more nuanced.
The smoked element is very subtle in this drink. We are going to conquer readily this by using a little liquid smoke in this recipe. Liquid smoke is made by smoking wood, and catching the smoke on a porous substance, and then the smoke is washed from the porous substance. You can buy liquid smoke in your everyday grocery store. I often find it near the condiments. You will need just a touch for this recipe. You can use liquid smoke in salad dressings, baked beans, and so much more.
Did you know you can make espresso which is used in a latte at home? With an inexpensive Bialetti Moka Express 6-cup Espresso Maker and Replacement Filter you can make homemade espresso without an expensive machine. Italians have been making espresso like this for over 100 years. This coffee is made on a stove top, and it makes delicious and flavorful coffee. You can also brew some really strong coffee; it is up to you.
Lattes are made with heated milk that has been frothed or aerated. You don’t need a fancy machine to aerate the milk. You can directly heat milk, and place it in a jar with a lid, and shake the heck out of the milk. This will increase the volume of the milk.
You can choose to top this latte one of two ways. You can use the foam from the frothed milk, or you can top with some sweetened whipped cream. It is entirely up to you on how you enjoy your coffee.
