Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole

May 12, 2009

The Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole has brown sugar, cream, marshmallows and oatmeal streusel making this dish perfect for your holiday meals. And the great part is, if you’re planning to use this for entertaining, you can make everything but the streusel a day ahead so you won’t be stressed at crunch time. Just cover the filled baking dish and pop it in the fridge. Take it out a few hours before you plan to bake it so the casserole can come close to room temperature, then you simply make your streusel and pop the whole thing in the oven, your family will be wondering when you had time to run out for some Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole.
Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole

Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole

Yield: 8-10 servings.

6 cups mashed sweet potatoes (5 to 6 potatoes-see step #1)
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups mini marshmallows

Oatmeal Streusel:
1/2 cup rolled oats
4 tablespoons dark brown sugar
2 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 tablespoons cold butter

Rub a little vegetable oil on the skin of each sweet potato and bake them in a preheated 400 degree oven for 60 to 70 minutes or until they are tender. When the potatoes are cool enough to handle, scrape out the insides and use an electric mixer on high speed to beat the potatoes until they are mashed and smooth. Measure exactly 6 cups of the mashed sweet potato into a large bowl.

Add 3/4 cup brown sugar, heavy cream, melted butter, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and salt into the sweet potatoes and mix well with the beater until all the ingredients are incorporated. Pour this mixture into an 8×8-inch baking dish.

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Make the oatmeal streusel by grinding the rolled oats to a fine flour using a food processor. A blender will also work.

Combine the oat flour with 4 tablespoons brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry knife or a fork. You should have a crumbly mixture with pea-size bits. Sprinkle this oatmeal streusel over the sweet potato mixture and pop it into the oven for 70 to 80 minutes or until the top begins to brown slightly.

When you remove the casserole from the oven immediately spread the marshmallows over the top. Let this sit for about 10 minutes. The heat from the casserole will melt the marshmallows, and then it’s ready to serve.

This is the Boston Market recipe. I usually add more marshmallows, but I use a different sized dish than Boston Market usually uses to make them. Having had worked there for a year, I can verify that these are the exact same thing as the Boston Market ones! My husband LOVES them.

is it OK to use Yams instead of Sweet Potatoes? I am confused by the difference.

  • Nina

I found out Yams = Sweet Potatoes! I made this for thanksgiving for my (then) fiance’s family and mine for the 1st time and it was a hit with EVERYONE!
I definitely recommend it to everyone. Enjoy :)

y’all are just ripping off one another’s basic online recipe. Probably pretty close, but not on target reason: what are those little crunchy cookie things? Not oatmeal, not precans – they actually crumble oatmeal cookies baked in a slab, that are broken into correct sizes by dropping them in the box onto a flor from a height of about 5 feet – breaks them into the perfect size. This goes onto the basic mix that tops the casserole. It’s all preproduced in our factory, then sent to the distributors for the final point sale. Can’t leave my real name, so take my e-mail, instead.
Not so sure what you mean about ripping off one another’s basic online recipe, but hey, that’s fine. Interesting point about how they may do the crumb topping. We are all often disgrunted about former employers.

Hello. This will be my first Thanksgiving bringing something for the rest of the family to eat, and I volunteered to make this. I would like to know what’s the best pan size to use. Also, if I want to use canned yams, how many cans would I use? I read a similar recipe of someone who used 3 cans and she said it turned out the same. Thanks

You would have to measure them. I think 2 cans might be too little, and 3 cans might be too much. They are often on sale this time of the year, so no worries there.

Can you be more specific with how to make the Oatmeal Streusel?
Combine the oat flour with 4 tablespoons brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Cut the cold butter into the dry mixture using a pastry knife or a fork. You should have a crumbly mixture with pea-size bits. This recipe rocks. It tastes exactly like the Boston Market casserole. Thank you Kitty.

I am glad you enjoyed this recipe!

  • JennyT

I work there now and that is SOO not how we do things.

  • JennyT

It’s close but not the same. Ours are sourced at Boston Market and the topping is streusel and marshmallows. We cook the Sweet Potato’s first without the topping either in a water bath or in the oven for about 20 minutes, then sprinkle on marshmallows first, then the streusel. We then put it into a 350 degree oven for exactly 7 minutes…

  • http://www.copykat.com Stephanie

I think your sweet potatoes must come in partially cooked or fully cooked. I have never been able to cook whole sweet potatoes in 20 minutes. Or maybe you are just reheating pre cooked ones.

  • Rainy

How do you grind rolled oats in a blender if you don’t have a food processor? Doesn’t seem like putting dry oats by themselves in a blender is a good idea…

  • Stephanie Manley

I would go ahead and do it with a blender, I think it would be fine

  • kim

dry oats in the blender is fine,I do it to make the oatmeal bath for my daughters eczema only because the aveeno has gotten so expensive.Try it it works.

  • Rabid_monkey202

I was too lazy to blend up the streusel, and it was still amazing!

If I double the recipe what size pan should I use?

  • Anonymous

    I would use a 9 x 13 inch pan.

I used about 16 sweet potatoes – which made 6 cups of mashed sweet potatoes. Yea, I was trying to double the recipe and only had enough for one dish. They under estimated the amount of potatoes which would equal 6 cups mashed.

This is a great recipe but I added nutmeg and a tiny bit of vanilla extract and it added a little kick. You can also par boil the sweet potatoes if you are short on time. Enjoy!
