The Cobb Salad was named after Robert Cobb, an owner of the famous Brown Derby Restaurant in Los Angeles (shaped like a derby hat!) The story is that late one night, Cobb fixed himself a salad made with some chopped leftover chicken and some other ingredients he had on hand. Several of his pals dropped by the restaurant following a movie preview and asked what he was eating. That salad became known as Bob’s Cobb Salad. In 1929, the Hollywood Brown Derby was opened, and the Cobb Salad, with its special Brown Derby French Dressing, became a fixed menu item. Today, Cobb salads, in various incarnations, can be found on menus throughout the country.

What Is French Dressing?

French dressing is basically a vinaigrette. The essential ingredients are oil and vinegar that are seasoned and can be combined with various other ingredients such as lemon juice, mustard, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce.

Making salad dressing at home is simple, saves you money, and produces a tastier dressing than buying it ready-made. You also know exactly what goes into it, saving you from having to puzzle out any strange-sounding ingredients on a label.

A homemade French dressing recipe is a great way to spruce up any salad. A classic French salad dressing is a dressing that everyone should know how to put together. It’s easy to make from simple ingredients.

Is Using Raw Garlic Safe?

It’s perfectly safe to use raw garlic in a salad dressing because the acid in the vinegar acts to inhibit bacterial growth. Just store your homemade dressing in your refrigerator.

While the ingredients are correct, the amounts are off for the original Brown Derby Old Fashioned French Dressing served on the Cobb salad.
