Dairy Queen Onion Rings – freshly made onion rings everyday.

May 3, 2009

These are from the Dairy Queen restaurants in Southeast Texas. All Dairy Queens are not equal, some do only ice cream treats, come are Brazier stores, and some are not.  I made countless of these during my days at the DQ.

Dairy Queen Onion Rings

2 Vidalia onions or even 1015′s when in season
2 C. flour
2 C. fine cracker crumbs
2 C. white corn meal
2 C. Buttermilk
1 C. Water
4 C. Crisco oil (or enough for your personal fryer)

Slice onions 1/2 inch thick, do not use the very small rings, save those for chopped onions. In a large bowl add buttermilk and water. Mix the cracker crumbs and the cornmeal together. Take out rings one at a time and coat them with flour then with buttermilk, and then coat with corn meal mixture. Drop into hot oil and fry till golden. Drain on paper towels.

    Hi,

I can’t wait to try these. I grew up and ate at the DQs you’re talking about. Do you by any chance have the taco meat or chili recipes that they used to use?

When I worked there we used lawlrey’s taco seasoning. We basically boiled together frozen burger patties, and added seasoning. Now for the chili if I recall we used DQ brand canned chili.

    Hope this helps!

What do you do with the cracker crumbs? They are in the recipe but the instructions don’t say what to do with them. After the first coating process or step in the cornmeal, do you dip the onion rings back in the buttermilk, then into the cracker crumbs, then fry them?

Mix together the corn meal and cracker crumbs. You will dip them into this cracker crumb and corn meal mixture together.
