I use the rice version - if that suits your taste. Alternate adding cereals to the mix helps, a cup of wheat Chex first. They take longer to coat. Also, I will add a cup of regular Cheerios to the mix, increasing the butter a tbsp. or two to make sure all are coated. For the pretzels, I find that the waffle pretzels are a nice alternative.
