There are so many varieties of apples, but what you want is an apple that will hold up well while baking. You don’t want fruit that turns into a mushy, soggy mess! Here are the best apples for making apple cobbler:

  • Granny Smith – This all-around apple has a firm texture and tart flavor that marry well for baking.
  • Braeburn and Jonagold – If you prefer a sweeter apple, these hold up well when they are baked.
  • Pink Lady – Crisp and tangy, with a balance of tart and sweet.
  • Fuji – Crisp and super-sweet.
  • Honeycrisp – A more pricey apple but great for baking.

How to Store Leftover Apple Cobbler

Apple cobbler is best when served warm from the oven. That said, the leftovers can make for a quick and easy dessert during the week and might be just what you need for breakfast too.

Cover the cobbler and store it in the fridge for up to 5 days. The topping will soften a little with time but will still taste fine.

Reheat individual servings in the microwave in 30-second bursts until warm, or reheat in a toaster oven.

You can prepare the filling ahead of time and freeze it for up to a month.

If you have a busy day, you can even make this dessert ahead of time and reheat it when needed. Simply bake according to the instructions, refrigerate, and when you’re ready to eat, pop it in the oven for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.
